Here is the single most useful fact in pest control SEO: almost nobody searches "pest control". They search the pest. "Termite inspection cost." "Bed bug exterminator near me." "Get rid of rats in attic." The pest is the keyword, and every pest behaves differently: its own season, its own price point, its own level of panic.
Most pest control websites ignore this completely. They have one "Pest Control Services" page listing fourteen pests, which means Google has no page to rank for any of them. Meanwhile the same six fundamentals I run for plumbers and HVAC companies apply here too, with the pest-page principle on top. Here is the whole system.
1. A page per pest, not a pest list
Google matches searches to pages. A homeowner searching "bed bug treatment" gets shown pages about bed bug treatment, so your site needs one: what treatment involves, what it costs, how many visits, what preparation you will ask for. The same for termites, rodents, ants, cockroaches, mosquitoes, wasps, wildlife, whatever you actually treat.
This is also where pest control SEO services earn their fee or reveal themselves: an agency that proposes a "pest library" of a hundred thin pages is selling filler. Ten real pages about the pests you treat, each with local proof and honest pricing, beat a hundred stubs. Termite and bed bug pages deserve the most care, because those customers compare quotes and read everything.
2. Your Google Business Profile does the heavy lifting
The Map Pack is decided mostly by the profile, and Google's documentation names the factors: relevance, distance and prominence. The work:
- Primary category: Pest control service. Add the specific secondaries your market offers (Bird control service, Animal control service) where they genuinely apply.
- Every pest listed as its own service with its own description, mirroring the pages on your site. Profile and site should tell Google the same story.
- Photos weekly. Techs at work, equipment, the wrapped truck. Active profiles beat static ones.
- Real service areas. The suburbs you actually drive to, not a 100-mile circle.
The full sequence is in my free 42-point Google Business Profile checklist.

Get My Free Pest Control SEO Audit3. Reviews: velocity beats volume
Recency matters as much as the total: forty reviews with the newest from this week beats a hundred with the newest from last year. Pest control has a natural advantage here that almost nobody uses: recurring quarterly visits mean recurring chances to ask. Build the ask into the service flow, right after the tech finishes and the customer is reassured, with a direct link. And respond to every review; BrightLocal's survey work shows customers notice. Templates are in my review response examples.
4. Time the content to each pest's season
Every pest has a calendar: ants and mosquitoes surge in spring and summer, rodents when the weather turns cold, termites around swarm season. Pages take three to six months to rank, so each pest's page needs to exist a season before its peak. A rodent page published in November is a year late; published in July, it is ranking exactly when the attic noises start.
5. Citations, and local links that break ties
Keep your name, address and phone byte-identical across Google, Bing, Apple Maps and the directories; consistency is what makes Google, and the AI assistants now recommending providers, confident you are one real business. Then earn a handful of genuinely local links: the supplier's dealer page, the realtor association you present to (termite letters make you relevant to every home sale in town), the youth team you sponsor, the local news quote in bed bug season. Five of those beat five hundred junk links.
6. Technical basics that quietly cost calls
Slow mobile load, a phone number that is not tappable, pages Google cannot crawl, missing LocalBusiness schema. Unglamorous, and expensive to ignore. Run your site through my free 30-second audit tool and you will see the same checks Google runs.
Why SEO is worth more in pest control than in most trades
A plumber wins a job; you win a subscription. A customer who arrives from a "carpenter ants" search and converts to a quarterly plan is worth many times the first visit, which means every ranking is worth more to you than the same ranking is to a one-off trade. That economics, and how to convert one-off jobs into plans, is the entire subject of my pest control marketing guide. The same fundamentals for other trades are in local SEO for plumbers, pricing is in local SEO cost for home services, and the done-for-you version is SEO for pest control companies.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is pest control SEO?
The work that makes your company show up when someone nearby searches for help with a specific pest: the Map Pack, the organic results and the AI answers above both. Its defining feature is that customers search the pest, not the industry, so the core is a dedicated page per pest, backed by a complete profile, steady reviews, consistent citations and local links.
Which pest keywords should my website target?
Every pest you actually treat, each on its own page. Termite, bed bug, rodent, ant and mosquito searches behave differently: different seasons, prices and urgency. A termite customer compares quotes for days; a bed bug customer wants someone tonight. One generic page speaks to neither, which is why it ranks for neither.
Can a local pest control company outrank Terminix and Orkin?
Locally, yes. National brands win broad terms, but the Map Pack is local by design and their location pages are thin. A local company with a focused profile, recent reviews and real pest-specific pages routinely beats them in its own service area.
How long does pest control SEO take?
Profile improvements often move inside 30–60 days. Pest and city pages take three to six months, so build each page a season ahead of its peak: mosquito and ant content by early spring, rodent content by late summer, termite content before swarm season.
How much does pest control SEO cost?
For a single-location company, honest retainers usually run $750–$2,500 a month depending on market and how many pests and cities you compete for. The recurring-plan economics make SEO worth more here than in most trades: one ranking can feed subscriptions, not just jobs.
Can I do pest control SEO myself?
The first half, yes: completing the profile, listing every pest as a service, weekly photos and asking every customer for a review takes discipline, not expertise. Owners usually bring in help for the pest-page architecture, technical fixes and local links.
