What Your Scores Actually Mean

The tool reports the four categories Google's Lighthouse engine measures, each from 0–100. Google's own buckets: 90–100 is good, 50–89 needs improvement, 0–49 is poor.

  • Performance: how fast your page becomes visible and usable on a mid-range phone over a throttled connection. This is deliberately harsh: it simulates a real customer on mobile data, not your office Wi-Fi. For most small business sites, 70s–80s on mobile already beats the competition.
  • SEO: the crawlability basics: title tag, meta description, indexability, alt text, legible font sizes, valid canonical. This one you should get to 90+; every point lost here is usually a five-minute fix.
  • Best Practices: HTTPS, no browser errors, no known-vulnerable libraries. Mostly reflects how well the site was built.
  • Accessibility: contrast, labels, button names. Not a direct ranking factor, but the same fixes make the site easier for every visitor (and every AI crawler) to parse.

The Core Web Vitals, in Plain English

Google's Core Web Vitals are the three user-experience numbers that feed its page experience signal. The tool reports the lab versions:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how long until the main content (usually your hero image or headline) is visible. Target: under 2.5 seconds. The usual culprit on small business sites is a huge unoptimized hero image.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the page jumps around while loading. Target: under 0.1. Caused by images without dimensions and late-loading banners; it's why visitors tap the wrong button.
  • Total Blocking Time (TBT): how long scripts freeze the page. Target: under 200ms. Heavy page builders, chat widgets and tracking scripts are the usual offenders.

A Good Score Doesn't Mean You Rank

This matters enough to say twice: Lighthouse measures technical health, not visibility. I regularly audit home service websites scoring 95+ that sit on page 4, and messy sites in the Map Pack's top 3. What actually decides local rankings. Your Google Business Profile, review profile, content depth, citations and links, never appears in a Lighthouse report. The score tells you whether your website is ready to rank; the rest of the work decides whether it does. If you want to see what that work looks like, my 21-step electrician SEO guide and local SEO cost breakdown show the full picture, and the free manual audit covers AI search visibility too, what ChatGPT and Gemini say when someone asks for your trade in your city.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this SEO audit tool really free?

Yes, completely. No signup, no credit card, no trial. It runs Google's own Lighthouse engine via the official PageSpeed Insights API. The only thing I ask for is your email, so I can send you the top fixes within 24 hours.

What does the tool actually check?

Four Lighthouse categories on a simulated mobile device (Performance, SEO, Best Practices and Accessibility) plus lab Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, TBT), the specific issues found, and your biggest available speed savings.

What is a good Lighthouse score?

90–100 is good, 50–89 needs improvement, 0–49 is poor. Aim for 90+ on SEO; mobile Performance in the 70s–80s already beats most competitors, and a perfect 100 usually isn't worth chasing.

Does page speed actually affect Google rankings?

Yes, as a tie-breaker, Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking signal, but relevance and local prominence matter more. The bigger cost of a slow site is after the click: mobile visitors leave before they see your phone number.

My scores are good, why am I still not ranking?

Because Lighthouse can't see your Google Business Profile, reviews, citations, content or competitors, and for local businesses those decide most rankings. That's what the full manual audit covers.
