The three zones of a plumber near me search result: Local Services Ads, the Map Pack and organic results, with what wins each
One search, three zones. Each is won a different way, and none is won by luck.

Type "plumber near me" in any US city and the page that comes back has three zones: Local Services Ads at the top, the Map Pack with its three pins, and the organic results underneath. Local SEO is the work of winning the two free zones, and for a plumbing company it is worth more than any ad budget, because the searcher standing in water calls whoever they see first.

I do this work for plumbers, electricians and HVAC companies every day, and the pattern never changes: the companies stuck outside the Map Pack are almost never missing something advanced. They are missing fundamentals. Here are the six that decide it.

1. Your Google Business Profile does the heavy lifting

The Map Pack is decided mostly by your profile, and Google's own documentation is unusually direct about how: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your shop, so the work is relevance and prominence.

  • Primary category: Plumber. Secondaries for what you actually want more of: Drainage service, Water heater installation service, Septic system service. The primary category is the heaviest single lever on the whole profile.
  • Every service listed individually, each with its own description. "Drain cleaning" and "repiping" are different searches; one generic "Plumbing Services" entry ranks for neither.
  • Real hours, including 24-hour service only if a human actually answers at 2am. Claiming it and missing the calls hurts twice.
  • Photos weekly. Jobs, vans, the crew. Profiles with recent activity consistently beat static ones.

2. Reviews: velocity beats volume

The profile gets you shown; reviews get you picked, and they feed ranking too. The part most plumbing companies miss is that recency matters as much as the total. Forty reviews with the newest from this week beats a hundred with the newest from last year.

Plumbers have a timing advantage no other trade has: the moment the water stops, your customer is the most grateful they will ever be. Ask then, on site, with a direct link to the review form. Ask every customer, not just the ones you expect to be kind. And respond to all of it: BrightLocal's survey work shows most consumers read reviews before choosing, and they notice whether the owner replies. I keep copy-paste response templates on the site if the wording slows you down.

3. Service and city pages that deserve to rank

This is where SEO for plumbing companies is won in the organic zone. Google matches searches to pages, and most plumbing sites have twelve services listed on one page, which means no page about anything.

Build a page per job: drain cleaning, water heater replacement, tankless installation, repiping, sewer line repair, gas lines. Then a page per major city or suburb you serve. Each needs to name the job and the place, give a real price range, and show real work. Two honest warnings: thin duplicate city pages with swapped city names are a penalty risk, not a strategy, and the pages take three to six months to carry weight. They are also the only asset that keeps producing after you stop paying for it.

4. Citations and NAP consistency

Your name, address and phone number, byte-identical everywhere it appears: Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, the trade directories. Not because citations are a magic ranking factor anymore, but because inconsistency erodes Google's confidence in the entity, and because the AI assistants now answering "find me a plumber" read exactly these sources. Fix the top fifteen or so by hand; skip the 300-citation blast packages, which are spam in a suit.

5. Local links are still the difference-maker

When two plumbing companies both have clean profiles and good reviews, links break the tie. Not bought directory packages: local ones. The supplier who will list their installer partners, the neighbourhood association you sponsor, the Little League team with your logo on the jersey and a link on the sponsors page, the local news piece about a frozen-pipe emergency you gave a quote for. Five of those beat five hundred junk links, and they are exactly the class of link your competitors are too lazy to earn.

6. Technical basics that quietly kill rankings

No plumbing site needs to be a technical marvel, but a few defects reliably cost calls: a site that takes six seconds to load on a phone, a phone number that is a picture instead of a tappable link, pages Google cannot crawl, and missing LocalBusiness schema. Run any site through my free 30-second audit tool and you will see the same checks Google runs, scored the same way.

What this looks like when it works

This is the same six-part system I run for every trade, and the results compound: it is how a Texas electrical company I work with went from 616 to 1,180 monthly clicks in six months, with the same playbook I detailed in local SEO for electricians. Plumbing responds at least as fast, because the emergency queries are bigger and the average competitor is weaker.

Where local SEO fits alongside ads, reviews and referrals, and what each channel costs per booked job, is mapped in my plumber marketing guide. What a fair engagement costs is in local SEO pricing for home services, and if you would rather have it done for you, that is my SEO for plumbers service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is local SEO for plumbers?

The work that makes a plumbing company show up when someone nearby searches for a plumber: the Map Pack, the organic results below it, and increasingly the AI answers above both. In practice: Google Business Profile optimisation, review velocity, service and city pages, consistent citations, and a small number of genuinely local links.

How do plumbers rank in Google's Map Pack?

Google ranks the Map Pack on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is fixed, so the work is relevance (a complete profile with Plumber as the primary category, every service listed, and a website about the same jobs) and prominence (review volume and recency, plus mentions across the local web). Most companies lose on the basics, not on advanced tricks.

How long does local SEO take for a plumbing company?

Profile improvements often show inside 30–60 days. Service and city pages typically take three to six months, longer in dense metros. The sensible order: profile and reviews first, pages second, ads to fill the gap if you need calls this week.

How much does local SEO cost for plumbers?

For a single-location company, honest retainers usually run $750–$2,500 a month depending on market and how much needs building. Avoid both extremes: $99 citation-blast packages, and padded agency retainers. A meaningful share of the early work is free if someone in-house owns it.

Can I do plumber local SEO myself?

The first half, yes: completing the profile, listing services, weekly photos and asking every customer for a review takes discipline, not expertise, and it moves rankings on its own. Owners usually bring in help for the second half: pages that rank, technical fixes and local links. A fair specialist will tell you which half you still need.

Do reviews really affect a plumber's rankings?

Yes, and recency matters as much as volume. Forty reviews with the newest from this week beats a hundred with the newest from last year. Reviews also decide conversion after ranking: most people read them before choosing, and they notice whether the owner responds.

Want the audit before you decide anything?

Tell me your company name and city. You will get your Map Pack position, the gap between you and the three companies above you, and the fixes in priority order. If the honest answer is that you can do it yourself for free, that is what I will tell you.
