Google Search Console report showing a Texas electrical company doubling organic traffic in 6 months
Real client result: a Texas electrical company doubled its Google traffic in 6 months

When someone's breaker panel starts smoking at 9pm, they don't scroll to page two of Google. They call one of the three businesses in the Map Pack. If you're an electrician and you're not in that top three, you're invisible to the customers who need you most urgently — and who are the least price-sensitive.

I manage local SEO for electrical contractors, including a full-stack strategy for an electrical services company operating across Texas. This is the playbook that actually moves rankings in 2026.

1. Your Google Business Profile Does the Heavy Lifting

Google's local algorithm weighs three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is where you control relevance and build prominence — my complete GBP optimization checklist covers every step in detail.

  • Primary category: "Electrician." Not "Contractor," not "Electrical engineer." The primary category is the single strongest ranking signal you control.
  • Secondary categories: Add "Electrical installation service," "Emergency electrician service," and any service you genuinely offer.
  • Services list: Fill in every service with descriptions — panel upgrades, EV charger installation, rewiring, ceiling fan installation. Each one is a keyword you can match.
  • Photos weekly: Real job-site photos outperform stock images. Google's vision AI can tell the difference, and so can customers.

2. Reviews: Velocity Beats Volume

A business with 40 reviews gaining 5 per month will usually outrank one with 200 reviews gaining 1 per month. Google rewards review velocity — steady, recent feedback.

Build the ask into your workflow: the moment a job is done and the customer is happy, the tech sends the review link by text. Response rates from a same-day text are 3–5x higher than an email the next week.

And respond to every review — positive and negative. Responses with your service and city naturally woven in ("Glad we could handle your panel upgrade in Abilene!") reinforce relevance.

3. Build City + Service Pages That Deserve to Rank

One "Services" page listing everything you do will lose to competitors with dedicated pages. The structure that wins:

  • /electrical-panel-upgrade-dallas — service + city
  • /ev-charger-installation-fort-worth
  • /emergency-electrician-abilene

Each page needs unique content: the specific problems customers in that city face, local code requirements, real project photos, and testimonials from that area. Thin, duplicated city pages with swapped city names get filtered out — Google has seen that trick for a decade.

4. Citations and NAP Consistency

Your business Name, Address and Phone number must be identical everywhere — GBP, website, Yelp, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, BBB, and the local directories in your market. Inconsistent NAP data quietly erodes Google's trust in your listing. Audit it once, fix everything, then protect it.

5. Local Links Are Still the Difference-Maker

Most electricians have zero link strategy, which means a small effort creates a big gap. The links that move local rankings:

  • Local chamber of commerce and trade association memberships
  • Sponsorships — youth sports teams, community events, charity drives
  • Supplier and manufacturer "find an installer" pages (Tesla, Generac, Lutron dealer listings)
  • Local news mentions — storm-season safety tips make you an easy expert source

6. Technical Basics That Kill Rankings When Ignored

  • Mobile speed: Most emergency searches happen on a phone. If your site takes 6 seconds to load, you lose the click and the ranking — test yours free with Google PageSpeed Insights.
  • LocalBusiness schema: Structured data telling Google exactly who you are, where you serve, and what you do.
  • Click-to-call buttons: Every page, visible without scrolling.

What Results Actually Look Like

On a recent electrical company campaign, this exact approach delivered a 58% organic traffic increase with 791 ranking keywords within six months. Local SEO compounds: month one is groundwork, month three shows movement, and by month six the phone rings consistently — without paying for every single call like you do with ads (see my Google Ads vs Meta Ads comparison for when paid makes sense).
